The Maine State Bar Association helps members stay ahead of the game with networking and professional development opportunities. These substantive sections of the MSBA provide continuing legal education and networking opportunities and promote collegiality among fellow members.

Administrative Law
Promotes the sound development of local, state and federal administrative law, procedure, and practice, and disseminates to the bar and the general public helpful information in the field.

Alternative Dispute
Resolution Section
Considers the integration of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures; provides a forum for comment, coordination, and information on developments in ADR that are relevant to the practice of law in Maine; and advises the bar and the general public of information of interest.

Bankruptcy &
Provides an organization within the MSBA for members who have a common interest in bankruptcy and reorganization law and practice, and a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas leading to the improvement of the laws relating to bankruptcy and reorganization.

Business Law
Serves the professional needs of corporate and commercial attorneys by offering CLE programming, initiating legislative reforms and providing a forum for professional discussions among the business bar.

Child Protection & Juvenile Justice Section Provides support and information for members engaged in child protection and juvenile cases, and promotes quality representation of children and care givers involved in child protection and juvenile litigation. 

Consumer & Financial Institution Law Section Provides members with educational seminars and materials, and a forum regarding consumer credit and financial institution law, encompassing banks, thrifts, credit unions, mortgage and finance companies, and other financial intermediaries.

Criminal Law Section Deals with all aspects of the administration of criminal justice.

Elder Law Section Promotes greater awareness of the special legal needs of the elderly, and initiates and assists in the presentation of CLE programs and presentations to the community in areas of the law relating to the elderly.

Environmental &
Energy Law Section
Monitors and advises on all aspects of natural resources and environmental law, procedure and practice.

Family Law Section Supports domestic relations, family law, and child protective practitioners through education and legislative relations.

Federal Practice
Deals with the full range of federal court practice.

Government & Public
Sector Law Section
Strives to improve the professional knowledge and skills of members employed in the public or private sector and engaged in government or public sector practice.

Health Law Section Promotes continuing education and dialogue among those members who represent health care institutions, health professionals, health care insurers, and government agencies involved in the regulation of health care.

Insurance Practice
Provides a forum for the exchange of information useful to attorneys who provide legal services relating to insurance matters.

Intellectual Property
Advocates for and advises on improvement in the law of intellectual property and promotes better understanding of its principles.

International Practice Section Promotes the interest, activity, and research in international and comparative law and related areas to further its development; diffuse knowledge; and formulate professional opinion and promote professional relationships.

Labor & Employment
Law Section
Studies and reports on continuing developments in the law affecting labor relations, while providing a forum for members to meet and confer.

Litigation Section Provides educational programming, support and information in matters relating to laws, rules and regulations governing trial and appellate practice.

Municipal Law
Considers the development of all aspects of municipal law, procedure and practice, and disseminates information in the field.

New Lawyers
Provides new lawyers in Maine a gateway for active participation in the Association, and provides networking, professional development, and career enhancing opportunities. (Automatic enrollment if < 5 years practice or < 36 years of age. No dues for this section.)

Real Estate & Title
Responsible for promulgating the MSBA Real Estate Title Standards, now in its fourth edition, constantly trying to keep the title standards current and responsive to the needs of practitioners.

Solo & Small Firm
Provides support and information for members maintaining a solo firm or belonging to a small firm. Also provides a forum for solo and small-firm attorneys to gather for educational programs on law practice management, networking and discussion of issues important to solo and small-firm practitioners.

Tax Law Section Maintains liaison with respect to federal tax matters between this Association and the Internal Revenue Service; provides continuing educational opportunities in the field of taxation; and assists the Association in any attempts to improve or develop state laws relating to taxation.

Trusts & Estates
Promotes the sound development of trusts and estates law, procedure and practice, and  provides a forum for members interested in the field to meet and confer.

Veterans' Law
Educates attorneys on veterans’ law issues and connects them with Maine veterans, service members and their families who are in need of legal assistance.

Women's Law
Provides a forum for women lawyers to gather for regular educational programs, networking and discussion of issues of interest to women attorneys.

Workers' Compensation
Provides continuing education to the Bar and others involved in workers’ compensation issues, and facilitates communication among legislators, commissioners, attorneys, insurers, unions, and others affected by Maine’s Workers’ Compensation System.
