In HBO's new documentary, ‘Pee-wee as Himself,’  we learn that Paul Reubens was openly gay but after he became famous and adopted his alter ego “Pee-wee Herman” he hid his sexuality.  

However, after his 1991 arrest for “indecent exposure" he was labeled a pervert, his shows were taken off television, and his career was severely damaged.  In 2001, law enforcement charged Paul Reubens with possession of child sexual abuse material when they seized what his attorney described as an  “extensive historical art photography collection.”  

In this presentation we will examine the criminal justice system’s long history of bias against the LGBTQ+  community. its sodomy laws that were used to criminalize  consensual sexual activity, and review case law from the United States Supreme Court sanctioning these prosecutions.   Finally, we will watch film clips of this documentary and discuss whether the criminal charges against Paul Reubens were based on bias against the LGBTQ+ community.

Do you control your digital life or does it control you? Whether texting, emailing, posting on social media, or browsing the Web, many people are at the mercy of their digital devices. Indeed, Internet addiction is on the rise and is linked to mental health concerns like depression and anxiety. In 2019, the average American checked their phone 96 times a day. By the end of 2021, that figure skyrocketed to 344 times a day-a 3.5 times increase since the start of the pandemic. The Maine CROWN Act: Anti-Discrimination Employment & Education Laws in a Post Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Environment

In 2022, Maine enacted LD 598, commonly known as the CROWN Act, amending the Maine Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles historically associated with race. This CLE examines the Maine CROWN Act within the broader framework of federal civil rights law, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Equal Protection principles, and evolving enforcement guidance.

Panelists will discuss how courts, agencies, employers, and educational institutions address appearance-based discrimination claims, including workplace grooming standards, compliance obligations, and the relationship between state and federal anti-discrimination protections. The program will also explore the policy considerations behind the CROWN Act, federalism issues, and practical guidance for attorneys advising employers, schools, and government entities.
