The purposes of the Federal and State Taxation Section are:
to maintain liaison with respect to federal tax matters between this Association and the Internal Revenue Service;
to assist the Association in any attempts to improve or develop state laws relating to taxation; and
to provide continuing educational opportunities in the field of taxation for members of the Section and members of the Association.
Annual Report 2002
The primary event sponsored in 2002 by the MSBA Federal & State Taxation Section was a liaison meeting between the Internal Revenue Service and Section members, held in Portland on September 17. The meeting included a discussion of a wide range of IRS programs, including the Small Business Education Services program, the Taxpayer Education and Commun-ications Division, the National Research Project, and IRS employee plans outreach activities. IRS officials also discussed the role of the Taxpayer Advocate Service and the progress of IRS reorganization efforts, particularly as they affect the Andover, Massachusetts Service Center. The Section anticipates that this meeting will evolve into a regular event. It provides practitioners with current information on IRS programs and initiatives, while also providing Section members with a forum for expressing their questions and concerns directly to the Service. The Section further hopes that a similar program can be initiated with Maine Revenue Services.
