Revised and updated annually, On Your Own is the MSBA's guide to the law for young adults published each spring in time for free distribution to graduating high school seniors throughout Maine (schools must order copies in advance).
A compact, 84-page guide, On Your Own covers the rights and responsibilities of adulthood, including buying a car; the rules of the road; making choices about military service, college, and finding a job; voting; finding an apartment; dealing with landlords; credit ratings and credit reports; spoken, implied and written warranties; consumer problems; what happens if you're arrested; how Maine courts work, and more.
Each year, volunteer lawyers review changes in Maine laws and changes resulting from cases decided on appeal by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, as well as applicable state and federal regulations and federal statutes, and incorporate these changes into each annual revision of the guidebook. Although On Your Own is free, it costs money to produce and mail, so many Maine lawyers, law firms and other businesses donate funds to offset part of the expense; the rest is borne by the membership of the Maine State Bar Association as a public service.
