MSBA Seeks Nominations for Ballou Award

The MSBA Board of Governors calls for nominations for the John W. Ballou Award, to be presented at the MSBA Annual Bar Conference this June.

In a "Memorial to John W. Ballou," adopted by the Board of Overseers of the Bar shortly after his death in 1993 at the age of 67, theBoard called him "one of the 'founding parents' of the Board of Overseers, having served on the Commission appointed by the Supreme Judicial Court which created the Maine Bar Rules and established the Board and its Commission. He was elected as the chairman of the Grievance Commission, from its inception in 1978 to 1984, educating and advising its new members. John also served as a member of the Board of Overseers from 1978 until 1986 and served as its chairman from 1984 to 1986." With degrees from the University of Maine andYale Law School, he practiced law in his hometown of Bangor from 1952 until his death.

The Ballou Award is given on the basis of the following selection criteria:

  1. That the recipient be living at the date of selection.
  2. That the recipient be a resident of Maine or a native son or daughter.
  3. That the recipient demonstrate qualities in keeping with the aims and purposes of the Maine State Bar Association.
  4. That emphasis be placed upon the contributions of non-lawyers but that selection be unrestricted.
